Everything To Expect At Your First Reiki Session
As we know from my last blog post, there are so many types of energy healing. However, in this post, I want to discuss one of my favorites – Reiki. This ancient type of energy work can be so powerful and beneficial. If you’re considering trying Reiki for the first time but aren’t sure what to expect from it, this is the post for you!
What is Reiki?
Originating in Japan, Reiki is a type of energy healing that’s existed for more than 2,500 years. Modern Reiki was developed in 1922, and is often used as a way to facilitate the flow of energy through the body. Many people see a Reiki practitioner when they want to reduce their stress, relieve the symptoms of an illness or injury, or improve their emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Many people enjoy Reiki as it’s relaxing, and can decrease feelings of stress, anxiety, and sadness. Some find that Reiki sessions can help them sleep better, and others find it helps them to develop their spirituality. Reiki is also sometimes used to help treat symptoms of physical or mental health conditions.
It’s important to point out that Reiki should never replace medical treatments. With that said, Reiki can be beneficial when it is used in conjunction with traditional medicine. For instance, this study found that Reiki helped breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy handle the mental and physical impacts of their cancer treatment.
How to choose a Reiki practitioner
If you’ve decided to give Reiki a try, that’s exciting! The first step is choosing your practitioner. Word of mouth is often a good way to find someone great. If you have friends or family members who have tried it, ask them if they’ve got any recommendations.
It’s vital that you ask questions before your session to make sure the practitioner is someone you’ll feel comfortable working with. These might include things like:
– How do you embody the principles of Reiki in your daily life?
– How often do you use Reiki?
– What system/s of Reiki have you studied?
– What training and experience do you have?
– What made you want to become a Reiki practitioner?
In terms of the first question, it’s important to note that a true Reiki master should live by the five core principles of Reiki and take them seriously. They are:
Just for today…
1. I will not worry.
2. I will not be angry.
3. I will be grateful.
4. I will do my work honestly.
5. I will be kind to every living thing.
These principles are a beautiful part of the Reiki practice. I also recommend that you try to embody them in your own life – just for today.
So, as you discuss the Reiki principles and the other questions, don’t just listen to the answers you receive. You should also take note of their energy and how they communicate with you. Do you feel respected and honored? A great Reiki practitioner will welcome your questions and want to do all they can to make you feel comfortable.
What to expect at your first Reiki session
Before your session, it’s always a good idea to use the bathroom and make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothes (as you’ll be fully dressed throughout the session). When you arrive, your practitioner may ask you some questions about your health, and may ask you to fill out consent paperwork.
If you have any concerns, be sure to discuss them before getting started. For instance, if lying flat is uncomfortable for you, it’s good to mention this so you can get extra support for your knees or back.
Then, your practitioner will show you into the treatment room. This is usually a quiet and peaceful space, perhaps with gentle music. You will usually lie on a treatment table or get comfortable in a chair.
Your practitioner will usually perform Reiki through their hands on your head and torso. The practitioner may hover their hands over your body or lightly lay their hands on you, depending on their personal style. They might also touch or hover over areas such as a scar or wound. They should never press hard, and they should never touch you inappropriately.
What does Reiki feel like?
Many people want to know what Reiki energy feels like! People have different descriptions of the feeling of Reiki energy. Some find it cold, others find it pleasantly warm. Some feel tingly, others feel pulsing or vibrating. It can range from very subtle to quite intense. Most people find the experience relaxing and pleasant. It certainly shouldn’t ever be painful.
What to expect after a Reiki session
After your appointment, you’ll likely feel more balanced. This could mean you feel more alert than usual, or more sleepy than usual. Some people feel very emotional and have a big cry after a Reiki session! This isn’t a bad thing – it can be very liberating to feel this kind of energetic release. Calmness and mental clarity are some of the most common feelings after Reiki.
